Dell EMC In-Cloud Data Protection: High performance, Low Cost

As more and more enterprises move their IT functions to the cloud, data backup and disaster recovery are #1 and #3 in a list of the top uses for cloud-based infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), according to a survey of IT professionals conducted by ESG Research. (Running production applications is #2.)

Together, the backup and disaster recovery use cases can offer a big opportunity for Dell EMC channel partners to help their customers address a big misconception that can leave their data vulnerable to loss. And what is that? It’s assuming that by moving their backup and disaster recovery to the cloud, their chosen IaaS platform provides data protection.

Of course, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, Amazon’s AWS IaaS customer agreement clearly states that while it takes full responsibility for the availability of infrastructure and related services, customers must take responsibility to secure and protect all their data assets. Microsoft Azure takes the same position regarding its IaaS, while offering backup and disaster recovery as services.

DIY cloud data protection can cost more than expected

Another opportunity for Dell EMC channel partners lies with those enterprises that have taken cloud data protection into their own hands, but are doing it wrong. For example, over-rotating their cloud backups can cost them as much or more than legacy on-premise methods.

To help these customers, channel partners can find the tools they need in the Dell EMC Data Protection Software, Enterprise Edition. It covers all consumption models, including public, private and hybrid clouds, plus traditional on-premise infrastructures and virtualized environments — all using a single management interface.

Importantly, the architecture of Dell EMC Data Protection Software Family is optimized for in-cloud data protection, whether covering application and database workloads, user files or long-term retention of data for archiving and compliance purposes.

Data protection architecture matters

Why does cloud data protection architecture matter? Inefficient and marginally effective uses of cloud resources or choosing anything less than the best-architected, most cost-effective solution can send cloud costs soaring as usage scales.

Here are six key advantages that Dell EMC in-cloud data protection can provide our channel partners’ customers:

  1. Performance: Client-direct backups in both Linux and Windows can be done without the bottlenecks caused by media servers, which many competitors’ data protection solutions require. This boosts throughput dramatically. So, for example, a user of Dell EMC in-cloud data protection can backup 28TB of data to the cloud in just 12 hours.
  2. Efficiency: Client-side deduplication and compression rates of up to 38.2x the original data size can reduce bandwidth and cloud storage consumption.
  3. Scale: Using CloudBoost, customers can protect up to 6PB of logical capacity in the cloud, while a single NetWorker server can protect up to 2,000 clients and 1,000 concurrent sessions.
  4. Security: Encryption of data in-flight and at-rest uses AES-256, the largest key size available, with source-to-cloud communications via SSL/TLS protocols. Files are divided into individually encrypted segments, and encryption keys are never stored with the data, so no single segment or key can compromise it.
  5. Self-Protection: Data configurations and metadata are automatically backed up to the cloud at periodic intervals to allow rapid recovery.
  6. Low Cost: All data resides on low-cost, highly durable S3 object storage in the cloud, and, thanks to leading dedupe and compression rates compared to competitive solutions, the Dell EMC solution requires comparatively fewer compute instances and block resources.

With all these advantages, the in-cloud Dell EMC Data Protection Software is extremely cost-competitive. In fact, to assess the cost performance of this solution relative to two leading competitors, ESG Research was hired to conduct an in-depth audit and analysis of all three solutions operating in the AWS cloud.

Compared to the competitors*1, the Dell EMC solution was found to deliver:

  • Up to 71% reduction in the amount of S3 storage required for the backup repository
  • Up to 88% lower monthly cost for the required EC2 and EBS data protection application resources
  • Up to 50% or more lower total monthly cost for in-cloud data protection infrastructure

If Dell EMC channel partners add these competitive benefits to all the inherent advantages of the Dell EMC Data Protection Software Family, the solution can practically sell itself. For more information, download the 10-page ESG Research report, “Economic Value of In-cloud Data Protection with Dell EMC Data Protection Software.” Also, visit the Dell EMC Data Protection Software Family web page.

Opportunity knocks: Game-changing Dell EMC Data Protection solutions for VMware workloads

Richa Dhanda

Richa Dhanda

Director, Product Marketing at Dell EMC

Business and technology landscapes continue to evolve rapidly. As a result, businesses today face many challenges. Data growth and democratization have resulted in more and powerful next gen applications. Shrinking business cycles exert a constant pressure to improve time to value for IT investments. The result? Businesses are increasingly transitioning to the software defined data center (SDDC) model and leveraging cloud for flexibility, agility and economics. While the shift towards SDDC and cloud has enabled unprecedented agility and flexibility, it has led to challenges for data protection, especially as it concerns virtualized workloads:

  • Virtual Machine (VM) and media server sprawl as a result of the growth of virtualization and the ease of spinning up new VMs
  • Increasingly stringent protection requirements due to government regulations and organizations increasingly virtualizing more business critical applications
  • Shrinking backup windows due to the need to protect more applications and more data

Data protection needs to modernize to keep up with demands of today’s VMware virtualized workloads, and transform to seamlessly protect tomorrow’s mission critical applications and support hybrid cloud initiatives.

Are other data protection alternatives ready?

Legacy SAN and network-based data protection solutions are not made for the modern data center (i.e the SDDC) and do not provide holistic protection for VMware environments.  These alternatives provide limited automation – primarily automate VM backup policy management. Due to architectural shortcomings, they are complex and expensive to scale, and provide slower backups and recoveries, especially as the numbers of virtual machines goes up.

Architecture matters – Dell EMC provides modern, transformative VMware data protection

Dell EMC data protection is architected for the modern and software defined data center. It supports a comprehensive application ecosystem. Our solutions provide modern, transformative and automated data protection for today’s and tomorrow’s workloads:

  • Automation across the entire VMware protection stack (VM backup policy, data movers/proxies and backup storage)
  • Simple and elegant scalability with VM growth without media server sprawl. Less than 5 minutes to deploy and configure a virtual proxy.
  • Best in class performance and data efficiency with less capacity and bandwidth required – 72x deduplication rate and 98% reduction in network usage*
  • Transformational management functionality that is designed to enable self-service to vAdmins, including native leading integration with vSphere UI and vRA, with oversight by backup/infrastructure admins
  • Faster backups and restores – backup times reduced by up to 50 percent and up to 20 times faster recovery for VMs with flash enabled backup storage. **

Keeping pace with IT transformation demands – VMworld announcements

Dell EMC is committed to bringing innovative solutions to meet rapidly evolving customer needs. At VMworld this week, we made two new announcements that will make it even easier for you, our channel partners, to boost your strategic value to customers who are looking for modern, simpler and more efficient VMware virtualized workloads protection:

  • Data Protection Suite for Applications Enhancements: Hypervisor and application direct backups for high IO/change rate, mission-critical workloads
  • Data Protection for VMware Cloud workloads on AWS: Data protection for workloads on VMware Cloud on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Data Protection Suite for Applications Enhancements

Businesses increasingly face technical and organizational challenges in protecting virtualized mission critical and high change rate applications.  From a technical standpoint, traditional VMware vStorage API (VDAP) and agent based backup approaches simply can’t keep up from a recovery window perspective for these large rapidly changing virtualized applications and databases.  From an organizational standpoint, there is a proliferation of backups from a variety of different roles (Backup Admin., VM Admin., App Admin, even Cloud Admin), which makes it very difficult to have backups that are in sync, coordinated and compliant. Dell EMC introduced a new hypervisor-direct data path with application consistency that resolves both issues, providing an express data path that is 5x faster and delivering data protection capability to application owners within the governance and oversight of IT.

Data Protection for VMware Cloud on AWS

VMware announced at VMworld 2017 that they will be offering VMware Cloud on AWS – the ability to run VMware virtual machines on AWS. Dell EMC has partnered with VMware to deliver the first data protection solution for these VMware Cloud workloads on AWS. Providing protection for VMware Cloud on AWS furthers Dell’s leadership in supporting customers in all the phases of their cloud journey:

  • Long term retention to the cloud
  • Disaster recovery in the cloud (AWS)
  • Protect workloads in the cloud, including VMware Cloud workloads on AWS (New)

These next-gen data protection solutions are architected for the modern SDDC and cloud enabling data protection modernization, automation and transformation.

Ideal VMware data protection for your customers

Dell EMC also provides your customers more financial flexibility with a new flexible consumption model, including subscription pricing for our software and pay per use pricing for our backup storage, that lets them pay for their data protection in a way that makes the most financial sense.

Combined with our architectural advantages and new announcements, you can rest assured that you are providing your customers with data protection that will modernize their environment, simplify management tasks, reduce costs, and enable them to transform to a software-defined and cloud-centric data center through automation, innovation and native integration with VMware.

Modernize Your Customer’s Data Center With the Simple Choice

Kristine Cornwall

Kristine Cornwall

Director of Channel Marketing
Kristine Cornwall

If you’ve sold your customer a system to better manage their business-critical database data, you’ve gone only partway to helping them modernize their data center.

In today’s digital age, industry consensus reports that 80% of all new data being created is unstructured—stored primarily in the form of files and objects. Unstructured data is far more than just wedding photos or a dozen versions of a PowerPoint presentation stored in a home directory. In the modern economy, unstructured data includes important application and IT data such as sensor data, log files from servers and networking devices, email, surveillance videos, CAD or medical images, metadata and much more. Every organization of every size has unstructured data, which needs to be stored, managed, analyzed and protected.Unstructured Data

How can a vendor who offers a single solution for all their customers’ unstructured data requirements help their customers fully transform their data centers?

When you partner with Dell EMC, you can offer your customers choice ─ one that is not complicated, it’s simple. Choice takes into account the customer’s IT infrastructure today and in the future. It also takes into account the amount of unstructured data and the speed at which it’s growing. And, it considers the ecosystem required to get the most from the organization’s unstructured data.

Provide your customers with solutions from Dell EMC’s best-of-breed portfolio:

Dell EMC Isilon

The leader in scale-out NAS as recognized by industry analysts*, Isilon was designed for unstructured workloads and delivers

    • Exceptional performance
    • Easy capacity scalability
    • Multi-protocol access
    • Cloud tiering

Isilon is the ideal solution for customers who are looking at file-only, general purpose NAS or unstructured NAS (audio, video or large graphic files) workloads, or who are looking to do Hadoop data analytics or require integration with ISVs in specialties such as video surveillance or life sciences.

Dell EMC Unity

The Dell EMC Unity product is a consolidated SAN and NAS array that is optimized for flash and simplicity. Dell EMC Unity supports file system scalability to 256TB (usable) with efficiency features such as inline compression, flexible snapshots, and VMDK cloning.

Unity is the ideal solution for customers who want their block and file storage on a single system or who want to deploy applications such as databases and VMware over NAS (i.e. Transactional NAS).

Dell EMC SC + FS8600

This easy add-on Gateway provides enterprise-class transactional NAS, based on the FluidFS scale-out file system, for SC Series storage systems.

Dell EMC SC + FS8600 are ideal for customers with SC Series deployments who are looking to add enterprise file sharing.

We’ve made it easy for you to get started in helping your customers manage unstructured data and transform their data centers

  1.   Familiarize yourself with the comprehensive portfolio of Dell EMC NAS solutions

  1. Identify your target customers

Many organizations haven’t had a plan for managing their unstructured data growth; and, consequently their file data is stored in silos that are inefficient and difficult to manage. This is a good opportunity for you to introduce a consolidated NAS solution with Dell EMC. Other organizations have maintained their storage on a competitive NAS platform for years and as those systems reach the end of their service life, there’s no simple migration strategy. Why not introduce them to solutions from the industry’s leading provider of NAS systems?

  1. Learn about Dell EMC programs to help facilitate competitive displacement

With customer incentives for swapping out competitive systems and local and remote migration services, we’re making it easier for you to establish a Dell EMC footprint in your customers’ data centers.

Contact your local Dell EMC partner business manager to get started, or visit the Dell EMC Partner Portal for more information on our programs.

New Opportunities to Expand the Data Lake—at the Edge, the Core, and the Cloud

There’s been a lot of talk around the massive growth of unstructured data and how the rise of the 3rd Platform (mobile, cloud, big data, and social) will only accelerate this expansion.

The EMC Data Lake Foundation has helped many organizations tackle this Big Data challenge. However, as more organizations use hybrid cloud to run their data centers and employ increasingly dispersed global workforces, your customers have a new challenge:

How can an organization successfully expand their data lakes to remote/branch offices and the cloud, while strengthening the data lake at the core data center?

Expand the data lake.jpg

The Solution? EMC Data Lake 2.0

EMC announced 3 new productsEMC IsilonSD Edge, Isilon CloudPools and Isilon OneFS.Next (the future version of the Isilon OneFS operating system)—that form an edge-to-core-cloud approach that lets your customers to harnesses the power of data lake 2.0 to increase efficiency, cut costs, improve data protection, and get more value from their data assets.

The new offerings also create interesting opportunities for you to help clients transform how they store and use data—whether at the core, the edge, or the cloud.

Enhance your Customers’ Data Lake at the Core with the Next-Gen Isilon OneFS Operating System

When your customers use EMC Isilon to consolidate file-based, unstructured data into a data lake, they can eliminate costly storage silos, simplify management, increase data protection, and acquire more value from their data assets.

And, with built-in multi-protocol capabilities, Isilon can support a wide range of traditional and next-gen applications on a single platform—including powerful Big Data analytics that provide your customers to gain better insight and identify new opportunities to accelerate their businesses.

The new Isilon OneFS.Next operating system extends these benefits with enterprise-grade, continuous data center service and non-disruptive upgrade capabilities. It also enables the new Data Lake 2.0 edge-to-core-cloud approach.

Your opportunities at the Core:

  • Demonstrate to existing Isilon customers how they can easily extend their Isilon data lake to edge locations and the cloud
  • Reach a broader range of customers in various industries that need to store and manage over 50 TB of file data in their data center

Help Customers Manage and Protect Data Networked at the Edge with EMC IsilonSD Edge

A recent ESG study1 noted that 68% of organizations now have more than 10 TB of data per branch office (or on the edge), compared to just 23% in 2011.

Data at edge locations (e.g., remote or branch offices) is growing. These edge locations are often inefficient islands of storage, running with limited IT resources and inconsistent data protection practices. And, data at the edge generally lives outside of the business data lake, making it difficult to incorporate into data analytics projects.

Isilon SD Edge.pngEMC IsilonSD Edge addresses these challenges. EMC IsilonSD is a new family of software-defined storage products that leverages the power of EMC Isilon scale-out NAS and the Isilon OneFS operating system. As the first offering of the IsilonSD family, IsilonSD Edge provides software-defined storage solutions for edge locations.

IsilonSD Edge will be offered in two versions—a ‘free and frictionless’ download for non-production use, and a licensed version for production use.

Designed to simplify data and storage management, IsilonSD Edge:

  • Scales to 36 TB of storage capacity in a single installation
  • Allows businesses to consolidate data to the core data center and thereby extend the data lake to include edge locations
  • Increases data protection at the edge by automatically replicating data to the core

Your opportunities at the Edge:

  • Show existing Isilon customers how IsilonSD Edge can extend the power and simplicity of Isilon to edge locations using commodity off-the-shelf hardware
  • Use the ‘free and frictionless’ download with new customers/potential prospects to introduce them to the advantages of Isilon scale-out NAS
  • Expand your business by considering new prospects with networks of branch locations (e.g., healthcare chains, financial services, professional services)

Help Customers Embrace the Cloud with Isilon CloudPools   isilon cloudpool.png

Nearly all businesses today want to leverage the cloud to cut costs, simplify IT management, and gain virtually limitless storage capacity. But the question for many is how to integrate their on premise storage infrastructure with the cloud.

The new Isilon CloudPools software—which allows your customers to select from a number of public cloud services or use a private cloud based on EMC Elastic Cloud Storage (ECS)—provides the policy-based, automated tiering that enables your customers to seamlessly integrate with the cloud as an additional storage tier from the Isilon cluster at their data center.

CloudPools lets your customers address rapid data growth and optimize data center storage resources by using the cloud as a highly economical storage tier with massive storage capacity for cold or frozen data that is rarely used or accessed. This enables more valuable on premise storage resources to be used for more active data and applications. To secure data that is archived in the cloud, CloudPools encrypts data that is transmitted from the Isilon cluster at the core data center to the cloud storage service. This data remains encrypted in the cloud until it is retrieved and returned to the Isilon cluster at the data center.

Your opportunity at the Cloud

  • Demonstrate to existing Isilon customers how they can easily embrace the cloud and seamlessly integrate their on premise Isilon storage with either public or private cloud services
  • Target new customers and prospects across a broad range of industries at are looking to leverage cloud storage services, and who are stressed by rapidly growing data storage requirements

You’ve delivered added value to your customers through services, relationship building, and consulting. Yet, you may feel like David to the Goliath of “Big Public Cloud” service providers.

In the story, David bested Goliath with a single stone. And, you too have that one “stone” needed to win against your Goliath … It’s called personalized service.

No Big Cloud provider can bring all of the value that you passionately deliver to your customers.

Your customers depend on you, and you’ve proven time and time again that their companies’ life blood—data—is safe with you. But, until recently, the infrastructure you’ve supported them with hasn’t been able to compete with the public cloud.

I’ve heard many partners talk how they were able meet their customers’ traditional storage needs with no problem, but sacrificed the cloud piece of business to a large public provider because they felt that they either didn’t have the right equipment, expertise, or thought they couldn’t compete with the cost per GB offered by a Big Public Cloud provider.

This is a tragedy.

Why? Well, according to IDC, unstructured cloud workloads will make up 80% of storage by 2017[1]. Cloud storage continues to grow while traditional storage declines. As a result, partners who deliver cloud storage service will capture this exploding piece of the storage business.

Make sure you’re one of them.

Why you should compete against Big Public Cloud

…And, how partners like you leverage—and win with—EMC Elastic Cloud Storage

Becoming a Cloud Service Provider is profitable and sticky

It’s no secret that if you’re currently delivering good service to your customers, you will be the first one they call to host new workloads in the cloud. Be prepared to quote a solution that can deliver cloud scale economics with the “self-service” ease associated with certain Big Public Cloud providers.

As an EMC Partner, you have access to a tool that will empower you to offer competing cloud services:  ECS (Elastic Cloud Service) Appliance. ECS Appliance is a cloud scale object storage that allows you to offer “public cloud” services—but with increased availability and the value of on premise storage with a trusted partner.

Big Public Cloud simply can’t compete with that peace of mind. In fact, as the Big Public Cloud empire expands, many customers find that their status as “just a number” comes with major disadvantages. For example, check out AWS outage knocks Amazon, Netflix, Tinder and IMDb in MEGA data collapse” from the September 20, 2015 edition of The Register.

Cloud Service Providers that deploy ECS see a boost in profitability because their cost per GB decreases as the amount of cloud storage sold to customers increases. You can profitably compete with Big Public Cloud and offer your customers a competitive price. In fact, ECS delivers more than 68% in cost saving over other Big Cloud service providers (2 Petabytes of storage, three site ECS installation).

What’s more … ECS Appliance solutions start at 144TB and scale to 2.9 Petabytes in a single rack. This enables you to start your cloud service business small, but have the ability to offer your customers unlimited cloud storage as their business needs dictate.

They’re your customers … Offer them services they need

Your customers know that they need to leverage the cloud to compete in today’s markets. Popular modern cloud workloads include:

  • Global content storage and distribution
  • Tiering and Cold Archive of data from more expensive NAS storage
  • Development of “Modern” born-in-the cloud applications
  • Large scale unstructured storage for IoT (Internet of Things) Applications
  • Analytics (e.g., Hadoop)

ECS also supports Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift, and requires no modification to the application.

Yes, your current storage talent can easily manage ECS

OK, so you’re interested in becoming a Cloud Service Provider, but can you do it with your current talent?

ABSOLUTELY.

EMC ECS Appliance:

  • Deploys in a couple of days and is simple to manage
  • Is a robust multi-tenant environment that provides you with powerful tools and dashboards to manage your customers cloud storage
  • Requires no specialized skills or cloud/object storage expertise to manage.

What about open source options?

While many open source options exist, it’s important to understand know that you’ll be building the solution from a “LegoTM” kit.

EMC ECS:

  • Is a turnkey solution fully supported by EMC’s Global Service network enabling you to save time, money and headaches
  • Allows you to confidently compete with Big Public Cloud because you don’t have to play the role of an integrator
  • Enables you to focus on value added services, not troubleshooting open source compatibility with various hardware combinations

Get started with EMC ECS today!

  1. Learn more about EMC Elastic Cloud Storage – Arm yourself with the tools and information needed to compete with and win against Big Public Cloud.
  2. Download the free EMC Elastic Cloud Storage Software – Experience what ECS can do for your customers and check out the simple-to-use, fully-functional dashboards for management, chargeback and metering.
  3. Identify an anchor customer, market your cloud service for multiple workloads – ECS’s cloud scale economics are really significant in the Petabyte range. Many partners identify an existing customer that becomes an anchor tenant for their cloud service line of business—typically, a customer with cloud storage needs in excess of 1 Petabyte. As ECS storage increases, your costs decrease—once you have an anchor tenant, it’s easy to sign up smaller tenants and build critical mass.
  4. Visit the ECS Appliance Sales Enablement Center to access all the ECS sales resources available to help you win.
